DIFC receives cyber threat intelligence platform

The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) has announced plans to launch a cyber threat intelligence platform to help firms in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) implement appropriate safeguards to mitigate cyber risks. The platform is the result of cooperation and collaboration with the Dubai Electronic Security Centre (DESC), the National Computer Emergency Response Team (aeCERT) and the Computer Incident Response Centre Luxembourg (CIRCL). Leading international cyber security specialists, including Help AG (Saudi and UAE operations of which were acquired by UAE telco Etisalat in September this year); Kaspersky; Palo Alto Networks; Cofense; and Recorded Future are contributing to the development of the platform.

The platform will provide cyber threat intelligence to the entire DIFC, creating a cyber community and ecosystem accessible to all DIFC businesses

Nhleko steps back as MTN Group chairman

Phuthuma Nhleko, the MTN Group CEO who led the company on an acquisition trail that turned it into an emerging markets powerhouse, has stepped down from its board of directors. Nhleko, who has served as MTN’s chairman since 2015 after relinquishing the CEO role in 2011, resigned this week as non-executive chairman.

Nhleko briefly returned to executive leadership of the group following the exit of former CEO Sifiso Dabengwa, to deal with the fallout from a US$5.2 billion regulatory fine in Nigeria

MTN to resurrect mobile money in January

MTN Group’s mobile money service is set to go live in January 2020 in South Africa, allowing customers to send, receive, save money and pay for goods using their mobile phones.

MoMo will run on the Ericsson Converged Wallet, and during the initial phase will be available to MTN customers and offer basic services

Econet Zimbabwe to introduce embedded SIM devices

Econet Zimbabwe and telco solutions provider Workz Group have announced a deal to offer subscribers in Zimbabwe network connectivity via embedded SIM devices such as the iPhone XS/XR/11 and Microsoft Surface Pro X. Users will now be able to connect to Econet’s network without a physical SIM. A market launch is expected in the coming months.

The collaboration between Workz and Econet is expected to make Zimbabwe only the second country in Africa to adopt the next-generation SIM technology
