Delta Partners and Vox Spectrum Limited announced that Delta Partners MENA Telecom Fund, a private equity fund managed by Delta Partners has invested in Vox Spectrum Limited.

Vox Spectrum Limited is an international technology and telecom group of companies based in Dubai, with offices in the US, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and India. The company is involved in the design, engineering, construction, installation and maintenance of a broad range of voice, data, video and wireless infrastructure solutions for clients worldwide.

Delta Partners and Vox Spectrum Limited will work together to further consolidate and expand Vox Spectrum Limited’s existing presence in Middle East and India, focusing on the three core product lines: telecom engineering, software solutions and electronic products distribution.

The investment in Vox Spectrum Limited is the fifth completed by Delta Partners MENA Telecom Fund. Last December Delta Partners co-invested with the Abu Dhabi Investment Company (ADIC, recently rebranded to Invest AD) in the acquisition of Orasinvest from Orascom. Delta Partners has also co-invested along with Virgin Group in Trivon, a provider of fixed wireless Internet access in Russia.

At the end of June, oil company BP Group revealed it had selected current Ericsson chief executive Carl-Henric Svanberg as its new chairman, ending a two-year hunt to fill the position.

Svanberg will take over from outgoing BP chairman Peter Sutherland in January 2010 – marking his first oil industry role. By the time Svanberg moves to BP, he would have spent seven years as CEO of Ericsson. He is chairman of Sony Ericsson and a non-executive director of Melker Schörling. Svanberg will join the BP board as chairman-designate and non-executive director on September 1, succeeding Sutherland on January 1.

Svanberg will be replaced as president and CEO of Ericsson by Hans Vestberg, who is currently CFO and executive vice president.  

Vestberg is 44 years old and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Uppsala, Sweden, in 1991. He joined Ericsson the same year and was within a short time period appointed to various international managerial positions in China, Sweden, Chile, Brazil and the US.

Svanberg will remain as member of the Ericsson board of directors and the main owners, Investor and Industrivärden, have expressed their wish to see him as member of the Ericsson board long-term.

Jordan’s telecom regulator has said it will negotiate directly with the country’s mobile operators in a bid to launch 3G services by the end of this year, after the tender process in May failed to produce a winning bid.

Operators in Jordan rejected the initial reserve price of JD50 million (US$70 million), which they said together with 15 annual licence fee payments made the case to invest in 3G deployment an unattractive one.

The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) had hoped to attract investors from Jordan and abroad when the delayed process began in March, but the only bidder, Orange Jordan, had its offer rejected because it did not comply with the terms and conditions of the bid.
A spokeswoman for the TRC said Orange Jordan did not submit the required financial bond of JD10 million. The operator’s bid also contained additional conditions that related to mobile spectrum and the ten month 3G exclusivity period.

The TRC said that given the ongoing global economic downturn it intended to go into a direct award of 3G spectrum to the existing operators within terms that it thinks are fair to everybody, including the operators, the treasury and consumers.

Qtel and Tata Communications today announced a strategic alliance that will strengthen both companies’ network reach in the region and internationally.

Under the terms of the agreement, both companies will align their infrastructure and work together to provide secure, scalable and flexible connectivity solutions including Ethernet, MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) and a wide variety of managed services to their global customers.

Qtel looks to provide its clients with world-class communication services and the capacity to expand internationally. Tata Communications continues to build connectivity into emerging markets, to better serve its customers.

Over time, the agreement will enable Tata Communications to deliver Layer 2 Ethernet over SDH, Ethernet over MPLS and a range of configurations including unique Dedicated Multipoint Ethernet services to its international network of customers through Qtel.

In return, Qtel customers will have access to a range of new MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum) certified services, delivered via Tata Communications’ major networks of submarine cables, which are among the most significant in the world, and its Tier-1 IP network that spans across five continents.

Mickael Ghossein is set to stand down as CEO of Orange Jordan next month, and move across to the French telco’s Kenyan operation as CEO of Orange Kenya, Comm. can reveal. Ghossein is a France Telecom veteran who was appointed Orange Jordan CEO in September 2006, having headed mobile operator MobileCom until December 2005, and then having been appointed executive vice president of Jordan Telecom Group prior to becoming CEO of the integrated operator.

Ghossein has presided over the integration of Orange Jordan’s previously separate business lines of wireline, wireless, broadband and carrier services.

Orange has been focusing on convergence in its Kenyan offering through its 51 per cent stake in Telkom Kenya in a transaction that it completed in December 2007. The French telco has slowly been undertaking a transformation of the business, which resulted in the introduction of the Orange brand in Kenya in September 2008.

Telkom Kenya launched GSM mobile services in September becoming the country’s first integrated provider of mobile, fixed-line and Internet services.

Orange Kenya signed a national roaming agreement with the country’s largest mobile operator Safaricom, while broadband Internet was initially available in the cities of Nairobi and Mombassa.

Prior to the launch of Orange’s mobile services in Kenya, and according to Mobile World database, Safaricom and Zain Kenya collectively counted 14.3 million subscribers as of June 2008, representing a penetration rate of 39 per cent. A fourth company backed by Econet Wireless launch earlier this year.

Orange’s emphasis for its Kenyan network in 2009 is to offer simplicity through such services as customer care to educate end-users and to demonstrate services. However new dealer commission structures implemented this May, may threaten some of the operator’s distribution channel reach.
